The series started in the 1890s with the Welsh army officer as head of security ( Mamur Zapt) for a nominal boss who is Egyptian, but of course for the British Empire. The subtle undertones of religions, social status and street culture are miles above the Agatha Christies which set plots in the Egypt of the time.
